May 2010 Election: The Heat is On

February 26, 2010

The May 2010 election is gradually starting to heat up the political landscape of the Philippines. Political campaigns on television are starting to dominate the screen; political jingles are repeatedly playing on the radio; political posters are starting to invade the streets with the not-so-real pictures and promises of the candidates. Indeed, political campaign for the election has started. Speculations of who will make it or not are starting to rise up, thus, surveys become a trend to really gauge at least the possibilities of the candidates to make it come Election Day.

Political platforms of every candidate are full of promises. Most of which will not be kept or even remembered once they are in office. Bernard Baruch, an American statesman, succinctly captured the essence of it in the cynical admonition to voters by saying: “Vote for the man who promises the least–he’ll be the least disappointing.”

This coming election means a lot to all of us Filipinos. It is the best time for us to design the future of the Philippines. It is in our hands that the future of our children’s children lie. We shouldn’t take chances and be a dumbass apathetic. You may be rich or poor, man or woman, gay man or lesbian, lettered or unlettered, barbaric or civilized - we are all in the same boat - we need to take our part, one way or another in this coming election.

We should learn from our past. We have seen unqualified, sinister and  corrupt politicians run our government like there is no tomorrow, not because of their genuine love for our country but their  genuine love for power, glory, money, money and more money. We have seen them come and go. Then back again. Aren’t we sick and tired of them, are we? Thus,  a noted philosopher George Santayana once said : “If we cannot learn from the lessons of the past and stop the practice of impunity, we are condemned to repeat the same mistakes and to suffer their consequence.”

I hope and  pray that those who will win, won because they deserve it and not because of their being famous actors or actresses nor their being the most number airplays of political ads on television and radio or their posters are everywhere. I also hope that we voters should be smart enough to choose our future leaders.

So, if we all be just one - one voice, country, one dream, and one destiny, we CAN! We can be the catalyst for change. Let us be the change we want to see, the change that begins in us.
